Doggies going home!

A guide to help you through the procedure of taking your pet to the UK
In our clinic we have a lot of enquiries every day what to do when planning to take Doggie or Moggie back home to the UK. We`d like to decrease the number of animals being dumped or left behind by their owners not knowing what to do…! To be honest - it IS quite a time consuming procedure but not that complicated once you know where to start.

Thomas Hinz gives us the lowdown on taking our pets back home from his practice in Sabinillas.

First step is to go back seven months from the day you want to leave. That is the time you have to go to a veterinary clinic to get your pet a microchip and the rabies shot, which is possible for animals aged at least 3 months. Together with the vaccination and chip you will receive a European vaccination book. Even if the booster is not due yet you should better make sure the number of antibodies in the blood is high enough when it`s time to do the laboratory test – otherwise you may have to start again! Four weeks after the vaccination you can do the blood check. Following the day of this test you have to wait six months until you can go. Within this time the test result arrives, and with this you have to go to the Centro de Agricultura in Estepona to get the animal`s vaccination book stamped by the local official veterinarian. One or two days before you leave Spain the vet has to do a deworming, flea treatment and a health certificate. This has to be issued within a time frame of at least 24hrs and less than 48 hrs before passing the Spanish border, so you should know the exact time and date you are leaving Spain. For animals that tend to be very nervous while travelling there are gentle sedation tablets available. Last not least - don`t forget to prepare a suitable travel box for your beloved friend with the possibility to serve fresh water.  If there`s any question left do not hesitate to call for further information.
