Rats and mice are from the largest group of mammals that are rodents to which there are
around 2,000 known species, their teeth constantly grow and can cause damage gnawing
any thing including concrete, wood and steel. They can cause diseases such as plague, weils
disease, salmonella and rickets. Signs to look for are, droppings (mice can deposit up to
80 droppings per night) gnawing (teeth marks) smear marks (dark grease marks due to their
greasy fur) and food damage. The three main species of rodents are the house mouse, ship
rat and Norway rat.

There are 3 pest species of cockroach found in Spain, they are the American cockroach
(redhrown in colour, about 6cm long and likes to live in drains) the German cockroach
(brown in colour with 2 black stripes o the pronoturn, about 2.5cm long and likes to live in
kitchens and bathrooms) the other species is the oriental cockroach and is rarely found in
southern Spain as it prefers the cooler northern regions. These insects carry diseases such
as salmonella, hepatitis, E, coli and clostridium.

Ants, bees and wasps are from the Hymenoptera family of insects which means social insects;
they live in a social structure with an egg production queen. The workers (sterile females)
ten the nest and search for food, the males only function is to mate with the queens. Wasps
were the first ever insect on earth, the main species found in Spain are the honey bee, the
carpenter bee, common black ant, argentine ant and the paper wasp.
Biting insects are mainly cat fleas, bed bugs and mosquitoes. Cat fleas are the only flea
which can live off the host and will normally bite the legs from the knee downwards. Bed
bugs live ion the bed frame, head board, mattresses and around the bedroom and will
feed on us when we sleep, the bite mark is around the size of a 2 pence piece,
mosquitoes breed in stagnant water so to prevent them drain all stagnant water pools.
Stored product insects are small beetles, weevils, mites and moths that are found in
grain, pasta, flour, rice etc and any infested product should be thrown away.

Flies are vectors of many diseases and should be prevented from breeding; the best
way to do this is to always close bin lids. All poisons that are used for the control of
pests are dangerous to humans, our pets and other non target wildlife. So great care is
needed when they are being used. It is advised to seek professional advice and the
services of a pest control company.
